The Politics of Opacity:

a near-Manifesto Editorial by Mel-em-Branca Pub Co.

[On the occasion of the launch of Otacílio Melgaço’s Triptych, DAS BIEST ODER DIE SCHÖNE? DIE SCHÖNE BESTIE (The Beast or Beauty? The Beautiful Beast) / DU PROCHAIN LOINTAIN TRANSFIGURÉ : A Book-Object / PORTRAIT ALOUD - Otacílio Melgaço Inter Viewed -]

The editorial policy of Mel-em-Branca Pub Co. articulates the concept of the “right to opacity”—originally formulated by the Martinican philosopher and poet Édouard Glissant and subsequently developed within critical and postcolonial theory—as a tool and a genuine strategy of aesthetic and political resistance against the totalization of the digital market. Within the ecosystem of contemporary digital culture, opacity is not merely a stylistic choice or an aesthetic refinement; it ceases to be a luxury and becomes a political, ontological, and technical trench—an impregnable one.

Nemesis:

The Ideology of Compulsory Transparency

To understand how Mel-em-Branca Pub Co. operates, one must understand the machinery, and the adversary, against which it struggles and rises in revolt: the digital market for cultural goods and the ideology of “compulsory transparency.” The market is founded upon the dogmas of transparency, total translatability, and immediacy, articulated along three fronts:

  • The algorithmization of meaning: Content must be instantly categorizable, tagged, and explained (tags, genres, tones, moods) so that recommendation engines can predict and distribute it.

  • The “didacticization” of the artistic object: Demands from the author a quick explanation, a spoon-fed caption, an elevator pitch, and the elimination of any syntactic or conceptual friction that might cause the viewer to leave the screen or prevent content from flowing seamlessly through the feed.

  • The capture of attention: Seeks to transform the work of art into a continuous stream of data—a fluid consumer good that passes through the subject without leaving scars, converting aesthetic experience into mere data consumption and an anesthetic for productivity.

Faced with this diagnosis, Mel-em-Branca Pub Co. understands functional digital transparency as the modern face of cultural colonization. The demand that everything be explained and easily translated destroys the density of alterity, turns the work into a mere commodity, and denies the inalienable right to mystery and complexity.

The Dimensions of Editorial Resistance

This politics of resistance takes concrete form in the editorial practice of Mel-em-Branca Pub Co. through strategies of creation, editing, formatting, and circulation, articulated across three fundamental dimensions:

  • Resistance within the experience of reading: While the digital market sells the illusion of “unlimited, instantaneous, and disposable access,” Mel-em-Branca responds by refusing to allow the electronic book to be reduced to yet another indistinguishable fragment of the informational flow. The eBook is no longer conceived as transparent, infinitely interchangeable content destined for rapid consumption; it asserts itself instead as an autonomous editorial object, endowed with its own form, rhythm, visual architecture, and temporality. Typographic choices, page composition, relationships between text and space, pauses, blanks, and demands placed upon navigation impose a deliberate slowing down.

  • Content, language, and sonic materiality: At the level of content and language, the textual and sonic dimension carries the esprit of “non-harmonic Harmony” and rejects appeasement and pedagogical simplification. The theoretical prose published by the press brings the rigor of critical philosophy and the academic milieu (Adorno, Benjamin, Spivak) into tension with tragic lyricism (Stefánsson, Cocteau Twins), creating a dense and hybrid language that obstructs diagonal reading. The untranslatable manifests itself in multilingual projects such as the journal Das Biest oder die Schöne? Die schöne Bestie: The Beast or Beauty? The Beautiful Beast (German/English), in which languages do not offer Cartesian symmetries but instead strain against one another.

  • Circulation and anti-commercial indexing: At the level of distribution, the press’s position is reflected in a circulation policy that openly challenges the logic of the algorithm and operates through a refusal of algorithmization by means of anti-SEO and anti-commercial-indexing practices, deliberately refraining from optimizing its texts for search-engine keywords. The press prefers that the reader “stumble” upon the work, encounter it contingently, or arrive at it through networks of affection and genuine critical mediation, remaining virtually invisible to mass data collectors and content aggregators.

“To proclaim the right to opacity is to say that I do not need to strip myself of my complexity or simplify my voice in order to have my existence ´legitimized´.” — Conceptual near-Manifesto by Mel-em-Branca Pub Co.

Ultimately, for Mel-em-Branca Pub Co., proclaiming the right to opacity is an affirmation that the human soul, pain, love, existence, and artistic creation possess a sacred, indomitable core of mystery that cannot be bought, measured, or translated into engagement metrics.

By erecting this bastion of opacity at the heart of the digital age and its market, the press ensures that the Beautiful Beast remains wild: a living, unassimilable, sovereign force, a work that refuses to bow to utility, that does not serve as an anesthetic for capital, and that preserves the dignity of an art resilient in its aura as, perhaps—and with Humanity and contemporaneity in view—one of our last, and therefore all the more vital, forms of freedom.

A Política da Opacidade:

um quase-Manifesto Editorial da Mel-em-Branca Pub Co.

[Em ocasião do lançamento do Tríptico de Otacílio Melgaço, DAS BIEST ODER DIE SCHÖNE? DIE SCHÖNE BESTIE (The Beast or Beauty? The Beautiful Beast) / DU PROCHAIN LOINTAIN TRANSFIGURÉ : A Book-Object / PORTRAIT ALOUD - Otacílio Melgaço Inter Viewed -]

Die schöne Bestie: The Beast or Beauty?
