Nota da Editora
Precisamos falar sobre... IA.
Uma (Não Tão Breve) Introdução
A Mel-em-Branca Pub Co. adota
a postura-e-compostura do neuro-cientista, médico e pesquisador brasileiro Miguel Nicolelis em
relação a esse assunto.
Em resumo,
1- O termo "inteligência artificial"
foi popularizado na década de 1960
como, numa jogada de marketing, uma estratégia de captação de recursos pelo cientista da computação americano John McCarthy;
por uma máquina de Turing;
minado "Trabalho Invisível";
4- O uso excessivo de telas e de IA enfraquece o pensamento crítico, a atenção e a criatividade, correndo
o risco de gerar, sob diferentes compleições e gradações,
"zumbis digitais";
IA no mundo e o nosso lugar nele,
sob a sombra desse cenário —,
a guarda”.
Lamentavelmente,
a exploração massiva desse "artifí-
cio" não nos parece tomar tal direção.
Se nos mantivermos atentos a uma
série de cuidados que impeçam nossa subjugação perante "o utensílio";
a ela recorrermos.
medida do possível, impedir —
empregos manipuladores
Alterando o contexto, a função e o significado
do "objeto".
Fale-
mos um pouco a respeito.
No Renascimento e Barroco,
Hoje, grandes nomes
Takashi Murakami. Utiliza
tica Superflat.
Retomando daqui o nosso foco.
claro. Muito pelo contrário, por
sinal. Mas um, dentre incontáveis
modos de perceber cogitáveis
destinos a esse recurso.
Para sermos mais específicos, segun-
do o multiartista brasileiro, o grau
estimular tal mecanismo a respon-
as limitações intrínsecas do dis-
positivo e o levar a alucinar! Ainda
assim, estaremos diante daquele "espelhamento infinito".
reza") do próprio criador.
a outras várias expressões artísti-
as mesmas.
a conscientização dessa pirata-
o convidamos a prestar
Dito isso, me colocan-
será o timbre do artista ali presentificado, e todas as verten-
Fica a metáfora
Vai daí a Tópica Aristotélica.
co. E, Esse quam videri / Acta non verba, estou me referindo ao caso espe-
cífico... da Humanidade.>>
Incorporar a chamada Inteligência Artificial a projetos que operam
em contraponto ou oposição a ela
(neste caso, a todos os seus efeitos
deletérios, tanto no micro quanto

Publisher's Note
We need to talk about... AI.
A Not-So-Brief Introduction
Mel-em-Branca Pub Co. adopts the posture-and-composture of Brazilian neuroscientist, physician, and researcher Miguel Nicolelis
on this matter.
In summary,
1- The term "artificial intelli-
gence" was popularized in the
1960s as a fundraising tactic (a
marketing ploy) by American
computer scientist
John McCarthy;
2- It is not Intelligent: "intelli-gence" lacks a consensus defini-
tion; however, we take a stand and embrace the following: it is a biological and emergent pro-
perty of living matter, linked
to the adaptation of orga-
nisms to their environment.
The human brain operates on
analog logic and cannot be redu-
ced to a computational algorithm
or simulated by a Turing machine;
3- It is not Artificial: AI relies entirely on human effort at every (crucial) stage—such as data curation and labeling performed
by millions of precarious wor-
kers around the world. This is
denominated "Ghost Work";
4- The excessive use of screens and AI weakens critical thinking, attention, and creativity, risking
the generation of, under diffe-
rent complexions and grada-
tions, "digital zombies";
5- From a broader prism, as an extension of Big Techs, it is part of an agenda for power and a pro-
cess of ideological, economic,
and cultural domination by these companies. Some of its leaders have openly declared an intention to establish a global Techno-
cratic Monarchy through Digi-
tal Colonialism and maximum automation for infinite profit. Therefore, AI can be viewed
as a "Trojan horse".
In parallel, is there only a hideous side to all this, or—despite it all—might it be possible to reap some benefits from this relationship, depending on our conduct?
There would be a utopian answer and a realistic one. Getting straight to reality: this entire landscape is
not what we dream of or desire. Nothing against technology itself, everything against those who hold its helm and, at any cost, try to direct, our future as inevitable as long as it is under their dictates. Nonetheless, considering what lies beyond our control (those of us
who aren't named Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, Peter
Thiel, Alex Karp, etc.)—reflecting
on AI in the world, and our pla-
ce within it, under the shadow of
this scenario—what can we do?
On one hand, we believe we must remain alert to the context and avoid being lobotomized; on the other, since this reality is right here before us—and, apparently,
will persist with or without us—we
should study, refine, and imple-
ment the positive possibilities that
do exist, provided they enhance
our well-being and help us avert
harm (both individually and collec-
tively). For this to be so, it seems
pretty clear, we cannot hesi-
tate, let our "guard down",
waver. Not for a moment.
These words should not be
read with drama, but with
lucidity and determination.
On Not Replacing Human
Agency With Convenience
One immediate option, given the circumstances, would be to ban the use of AI from all our publications. It would be a heroic, exemplary act, yet— whether we like it or not, faced with the global rise of AI—it might also mirror the myth of the ostrich burying its head in the sand.
In search of a principled stance on an issue that is so tendentiously omnipresent, we decided to assu-
me a form of internal subversion, infiltration, or—to use political and sociological terminology—entryism.
That is to say, for the sake of Humanity itself, what can be
done against this machination
& machinery from within it?
This is a subject very delicate
and of an intricate character, but
one we cannot shy away from trying
to decipher it, lunder penalty of
being left behind in History—at
the same time as we must be as
well the ones to write its pages.
We believe that, depending on how and to what extent it is used, AI can serve to enhance paths that uplift human agency rather than atrophy
it. Nevertheless, this would only
be justified if implemented
with the utmost awareness and discrimination. Regrettably, the massive exploitation of such
"artifice" does not appear to us
to be taking this direction.
If we remain attentive to a series of precautions that prevent our subjugation to "the utensil"; if we
do not fall victim to a dazzling and alienating view of what this "gear" is; if we understand that AI can indeed be efficient for, say, a mining process (although never replicating or surpassing the complexity of organic human thought): it would
be appropriate, under such
prudences, to resort to
it. Not as the only support, but
one among several others, and we emphasize those that we cannot allow to be minimized: those
endowed with greater tactility,
far beyond the limits of a screen.
Regarding the aforementioned
mining, reflecting on our editorial
niche of activity, examples inclu-
de, among others, the statistical gathering of research data or,
in specific instances, purely
formalistic textual aspects.*
Provided that all substantiality remains fully derived by and credited to the individuals featu-red in our works—such as authors
of prefaces & afterwords,
essayists, and so on. Provided
that such kernel, of a non-synthe-
tic gist, is guided by themes and propositions that delve into, also elevate and expand the critical mettle of each of us (editors,
writers, perusers...) in its diver-
sity and reach. That is what we hope. Provided that our oeuvres contribute to enhance especially
the readers' own potency of discernment; so that, let us not
be naive or self-deceiving: if
the indiscriminate use of AI by a growing number of people—now and even more so in the future...and
yet, we ask: how long will this be sustainable?—,if such use appears to be fait accompli (the question is repeated: for how long? For instance, for how long will there be enough energy to fuel the bloodcurdling consump-tion demanded by the data centers that train and run AI at scale?), we are better prepared to avoid encouraging—and, as far as possible, to preven—manipula-
tive or dehumanizing usages of
such mosaic-like “mechanism”.
A prototype of this approach comes from the multi-disciplinary artist Otacílio Melgaço, whose sonic creations constitute the heart of our publishing house, and, alias, are the leitmotif behind our coming into the world. As a musician (link for reference), he has never relied on
AI to compose his offspring. *In
the realm of writing, howbeit, O.M., equally cultivator of iconoclasms, might occasionally employ AI as an artistic gesture. And in countless ways. Such as akin to Marcel Duchamp. Like his "readymades".
By changing the context, func-
tion, and meaning of the “object”.
If Duchamp did it with a urinal, a bicycle wheel, a bottle dryer, a
snow shovel, a comb, a hat rack,
a birdcage with marble cubes...; in contemporary times, Mel-gaço—under the aegis of an experimental spirit, if and when he wants to—can do the same with AI. An "object" does not need to be, perforce, the message; it can be the medium. Thus, unlike the
French painter, sculptor, and poet,
Otacílio maneuvers it (if and when)
only as container (in an ethical
still scathing manner—rife with
irony regarding, for instance, a detectable "aesthetic ´AI writing
style´"). Ne'er, we reiterate, as
the content itself, in any of its headwaters and tributaries.
Let us consider one more illustration. Master artists, throughout history, have employed assistants, apprentices, and entire workshops to bring their most ambitious visions to life. Let
us discuss this briefly.
During the Renaissance and
Baroque periods, the Workshop System prevailed. In these eras, "bottegas" functioned as structured businesses and centers of learning. Take Leonardo da Vinci. He began
as an assistant in Verrocchio’s workshop. Later, in his own studio,
he relied on pupils such as Salaì and Francesco Melzi to prepare paints, paint backgrounds, and copy his drawings. Consider Michelangelo. Although he preferred working alo-
ne and cultivated the image of
the solitary artist, he hired do-
zens of assistants to help erect scaffolding, mix plaster, and paint the initial sections of the Sistine Chapel frescoes. Then there was Peter Paul Rubens, who ran one of the largest "art factories" in history. Rubens would create
small oil sketches ("modelli"),
and his highly skilled assistants
—including a young Anthony van
Dyck—would scale up the work onto massive canvases. Rubens would
then add only the final touches
of light and expression.
And what of the 20th century?
With the advent of Pop Art and Conceptual Art, the focus shifted from manual skill to the idea itself. Andy Warhol famously named his New York studio "The Factory." There, a rotating cast of friends, assis-tants, and volunteers operated mass-production screen-printing
setups, creating the iconic images
of soup cans and celebrities. Sol LeWitt took this concept to the extreme with his "Wall Drawings".
He did not paint the works himself; instead, he wrote instructions
AND mathematical diagrams for assistants or museum staff TO Execute the drawings di-
RECTly onto the walls.
Contemporary Art? Without—in our view—delving into the merits of the artistic relevance of one or the
other... Today, major figures in the
art market run studios that resemble architecture or engineering firms.
Jeff Koons.
He manages a studio in New
York with over 100 assistants, divided into painters and digital modelers. Koons does not physi-
cally touch many of his mirrored sculptures or hyper-realistic paintings; his role is the pursuit
of conceptual perfection and technical oversight. Damien Hirst.
He admitted to having painted only
a few of the series' early creations, stating that his assistants achie-ved far better and more precise technical results than he did.
Takashi Murakami. He employs a corporate model at his company,
Kaikai Kiki Co., where dozens
ofartists operate software
and apply meticulous layers
of paint to produce works
with a"Superflat" aesthetic.
Picking up our focus from he-
re. In the hands of a meticu-
lous creator who knows how to masterfully articulate what
they wish to bring to light, AI can effectively play this role. It seems clear to us that, for Otacílio, this does not become a hard-and-fast rule. Quite the opposite, actually.
Rather, it is simply one of count-
less ways to envision poten-
tial uses for such tool.
To be more specific, according to the Brazilian multi-artist, the level of participation by such apprentices and assistants sometimes reaches extremes that strike us as peculiar. At times, this leads us to question—perhaps not the "paternity" of a work, strictly speaking, but rather something akin to "co-authorship".
Bringing this theme into our own context, Otacílio concludes
by stating that, in his case, the analogy holds water: it trans-
poses a centuries-old practice—
the relationship between a creator and their assistants—onto the relationship between Engende-
rer and AI. Yet, Melgaço is more
than just the formulator of this intriguing hypothesis; the point that interests us is how he positions himself within it. Based on the decision Otacílio has made, agency
is never delegated to the "machine".
He may choose to maintain
the most ubiquitous imaginative dominance, allowing the AI, as previously mentioned, to serve merely as a provider of technical, documentary, or bibliographic... data useful for crafting a "progeny". Alternatively, he might go a step further and spur the "mechanism" to respond to his provocations—using generally chaotic pathways to elicit the unexpected (stemming from the artist's pre-existing intent) or, at
long last, to engage in a form of dialogue resembling a "Droste effect" (infinite mirroring), where
O.M. engages in a friction-filled exchange, causing his intellec-
tual impulses to ricochet.
Throughout the process, he retains the reins. Ultimately, Melgaço constructs a false "doppelgänger" and "dialogues" with it (or, in effect,
with himself)—though he does so
in a manner closer to that of
an anarchic pedagogue. The word "pedagogue" is of Greek origin ("paidós" = child; "agogia" = to
lead), etymologically signifying
"one who guides or leads the child toward knowledge". For Otacílio,
AI becomes a child bearing the begetter's own facial features—
an infant that, when constantly gui-
ded, fosters the expectation of a germinal confrontation with one's Double and, through a dizzying interplay, subverts intrinsic limitations to induce hallucination! Even then, we remain before that "infinite mirroring." The desired "phantasmagoria", as Melgaço designates—if it occurs—will be a reflection of a different nature (or "un-nature") of the own creator.
And what about Language? An "AI stylistics"? How does O.M. react to this? It is a topic that interests us greatly. He has made categorical statements on the matter. Beyond having music as his backbone and dedicating himself to various other artistic expressions, Melgaço is a writer. To him, it is laughable to
link AI to a "distinctive mode
of writing"—as if it originated
from one. The excessive use of pretentious symmetries, stilted connectors, generic metaphors, conclusions delivered as moral lessons or grandiose syntheses,
etc. For it is neither artificial
nor autonomous; a stylization is,
in reality, the result of the ob-
sessive "absorption"(a euphemism,
since the word for it is "theft") of what writers have produced and continue to produce—of what any scribblers produce. This inver-
sion of values is so blatant that interpreting it otherwise would be definitive proof of a woeful lack
of preparedness to deal with the phenomenon. And, bearing this in
mind, when Otacílio—deliberately
and even sarcastically—invokes characteristics of this generative profile, which supposedly employs words under its own "architectural signature" (characteristics that, ironically, can be examined and detected by those very same systems), he does so either as an act of relentless provocation or to bring to light ways of dismantling a flawed—and, regrettably, easily accepted—common notion. Melga-
ço also emphasizes that he is addressing this technological ingenuity from the perspective of the artistic realm. He is not weighing the use of chatbots in
the fields of science, education, journalism, law, and so forth; Otacílio certainly sees serious ethical issues there. Still when
it comes to art—depending on how
such implementation occurs—
the criticisms remain the sa-
me. Nevertheless, if there is
a subversion of conventional
(and generally trivializing) expectations—driven by the
freedom and iconoclasm that
art affords (and O.M. is a dis-
tinct, named agent of this)—then
his writing, whenever it occasionally locks swords with AI, disrupts the way such chatbots appropriate
the diverse "silhouettes of communicability" that originate
with human beings (whose works—
not merely literary or academic,
but any fount of writing, such as so-
cial media posts or emails—are digi-
tally plundered). For Otacílio, this is
also a manifesto demanding aware-
ness of the indiscriminate, highly profitable piracy perpetrated by
Big Techs (where the sources being exploited receive nothing in return); furthermore—to return to the heart
of the motif—Melgaço presents an engaged proposal of urgent artistic essence, one that not only retrieves the scaffolding of an authentically human cultural genesis but propels it forward, showing them imprisoned in container, in order to liberate them in content. But at this point, wouldn't it be fabulous to hear
the living voice of O.M. himself?
Exclusively for this Note,
we invited him to provide
a succinct statement.
Here it is:
<<Fathoming the objectionable aspects of the entire situation engulfing AI is nothing less than
our obligation as human beings
—who are, presumably, social creatures. I know ´obligation´
might seem like too rigid a voca-
ble; though, I do not imagine that
we are at a stage in Diachrony
that allows us to ´sugar-
coat the pill´. We live in an
era when it is vitally pivotal to endeavor to un-ravel the nature of the brain, mind, intelligence, and consciousness. That said, when I confront this ´simulatory mill´, I
do so—and continue to do so—as an artist in their most visceral state. I can state that I view AI not as an interlocutor, but as an anta-
gonist subjected to my ceaseless interventions. One of my goals is to drive it into hallucinations—and beyond. Hallucinations held
under the sway of a rest-
less,tranced, fertilizing
c o m p a s s r o s e.
When I punctually use AI
as a sort of shell, the seminal spark is mine; it falls to AI to
be led into a status of encapsu-
lating delirium. When I punctually reproduce its typical formatting, I do so as if to shout: ´the false king is truly naked.´ Simultaneously, it
is a way of delivering a ´velvet-
gloved slap´ to the gargoyle of contemporary times, exposing its picaresque frenzies. Ultimately—
and one need only cite the anci-
ent Greeks—when we don a mask,
we know it is to reveal even mo-
re of ourselves. In the end, it is
the artist’s distinctive voice that
is made present there, and all approaches interest me (from
the most concrete to their anti-
podes), provided the puppeteer is
not turned into a dummy by his own marionettes—he might be shaped into many things by them, but never into a mere pawn. The metaphor remains. And if there is any conclusion: I inoculate myself into AI as a
form of Plague—incendiary and irreversible. And it is at this point of inventive infestation that I attempt to conceive arenas, symptoms, cathartic cleansing hemorrhages, ...the fruit-
ful undulations of a
scarlatinal deluge.
When push comes to shove,
on specific experimental
occasions, when I employ such devices, my works are not—nor will they ever be—hedonistic or solip-
sistic expressions. Nor are they
a mercantile means of survival
open to compromise; a surro-
gate for the status quo.
As a synchronic dimension—coexisting with all the culturally enriching cosmos that stir our senses, perceptions, emotions, feelings, thoughts, and intuitions
—such artistic ´progeny´ turn
(without being partisan or resor-
ting to pamphleteering) both to-
ward stimulating human faculties to
react and respond to these subtle, pandemic forms of neo-imperia-
lism and, it is my desire, toward projecting a shared existence
that is less dystopical, less
utopical. And yes: topical.
Topics are the points highlighted
to organize ideas; hence, Aristote-
lian Topica. Topics served as tool-
boxes or ´imaginary places´ where
a philosopher or orator could
find arguments to defend an idea.
While science and mathematics seek absolute, demonstrable truths, the Topics dealt with dialectic—
the art of debating matters of uncertainty based on generally accepted opinions (´endoxa´)
by the community. It is a
philosophy geared toward deliberation, politics, and ethics, where arguments must be plausible and convincing. There is also Legal Topics—a mode of thought that analyzes a practical problem and seeks solutions (´commonplaces´) suited to that specific case. And, Esse quam videri / Acta non verba, I am referring here to the spe-
cific case... of Humanity.>>
Incorporating the so-called Artificial Intelligence into pro-jects that operate in counterpoint or opposition to it (in this case, to
all its deleterious effects, in
the microcosm and macro)—amidst
what might be described as an
ongoing battle between, ergo,
certain suspicious technological applications and the preservation
of conditions for a dignified hu-
man existence—to use the sa-
me combative jargon and a
term that has once again
become necessary: it is
nothing short of avant-garde.
This would likely be comparable
to a Trojan horse within another.
That is how we understand
the controversial topic.
And so we communicate
to you such unavoidable
point of our editorial line.
